Seachange Lights Up this Christmas

22 December 2015 by Shane Cresser

Seachange Arundel Residents’ 4th Annual Christmas Lights display was celebrated in a magical evening at the community’s 5 Star Country Club on Saturday 19th December. Over 400 residents, family, friends and members of the local community joined in the festivities, with a special visit by Santa topping off a truly wonderful evening.

Local Councillor William Owen-Jones was in attendance to announce the Christmas lights resident winners. Mr Owen-Jones stated Seachange was a glowing example of over 50s living and enjoyed being part of the annual festivities.

Family and friends of Seachange residents were invited to tour the community and view the resident Lights displays. Voting by residents and guests led to awards for the remarkable efforts and spectacular displays of numerous residents. Best Street was taken out once again by Narrabeen Street who celebrated the evening in style and community spirit with their own street party.

Entertainment for the evening included a performance by the residents’ choir, the Seachange Songbirds, who entertained all by performing an array of classic Christmas carols. Seachange Project Director Mr Phil Goodman commended the residents on their community spirit and lighting display efforts. The night also featured a special appearance by Santa and Mrs Claus by way of a less traditional mode of transport – a chopper motor cycle.

The evening festivities concluded with Seachange residents and guests presented with gifted Christmas puddings on behalf of the community management.
“It is our small way of saying thank you to the community for the support they provide the Seachange Lifestyle Resorts with throughout the year,’ stated Mr Goodman.

Special thanks are extended to the Arundel Tavern and Christmas Galore for their continued support.

Why Swimming is so Healthy for Seniors

14 December 2015 by Shane Cresser

In our Arundel lifestyle retirement village, Seachange Arundel, we have a swimming pool and it gets used a lot. That is for two reasons. First, it is fun. Second, swimming is great exercise that helps keep seniors healthy. Here’s why.

Low Impact on Joints

Swimming may be the perfect exercise for those who have joint problems and don’t want to hurt them further. There is no traumatic stress on the hips, knees, ankles or back when swimming because they aren’t bearing weight or slamming into the pavement like what happens in jogging or running.

Increases Flexibility

While most people think you have to do stretching to increase your flexibility, swimming also increases it because you are stretching without even knowing it. Increasing flexibility can increase coordination and give you better posture, less soreness, less back pain and fewer injuries.

Tones Muscles

Water provides twelve times as much resistance as air does. In addition, swimming forces you to use almost every muscle in your body. Even if you are just walking on the bottom of the pool, you are getting great exercise due to the resistance of the water. This builds your strength, muscle tone and self-confidence.

Less Chance of Osteoporosis

Swimming makes your bones bear weight, making you less likely to suffer from osteoporosis. After the age of 50, approximately 33% of women and 20% of men experience at least one fracture of a bone due to osteoporosis. Swimming makes it less likely.

Healthy Heart

Swimming is an aerobic exercise. In other words, when you swim, you help your heart become larger, stronger and pump blood more efficiently. This reduces inflammation in your arteries and reduces your chances of coronary heart disease.

Better Mental Health

Swimming can actually improve your mental health because it can improve mood levels and reduce stress. Swimming is also a great way to be around people and avoid isolation.

How to Keep Playing Golf Well into Your Senior Years

11 December 2015 by Shane Cresser

In our active adult community, Seachange Arundel, we have a lot of seniors who still play golf. We are within 20 minutes of four golf courses and we have a putting green in the community. One of the main concerns we all have when we get older is how to keep playing the game we love for as long as possible and still be able to play well enough to make it enjoyable.

Here are some tips for playing golf well into your senior years.

Accept Your Limitations and Make Concessions

As you get older, you are going to lose some distance because you will lose some strength and flexibility. In addition, golf can start to hurt more as we get older, with aches and pains seemingly appearing out of nowhere. Our solution: accept your limitations as the “new normal.” Try to stay as fit as you can, but you will also need to make some concessions.

When you start to lose swing speed, you may go from a stiff shaft to a regular shaft and eventually to a senior shaft. You won’t be able to swing a 9 degree lofted driver anymore, so you will probably progress to a 10.5, a 12 or even a 13 if you can order custom clubs. You might find it better to throw out your driver and use a 3-wood off the tee.

The idea is going to be to get around the course pain free and keep it in the fairway, even if you hit a shorter distance.

Your Short Game is Your Best Friend

When you can’t reach an average par 4 in two anymore, you will need to work on your short game. If you can master your wedge and putter from 50 yards and in, you will still be able to turn in some nice scores, even in your 80’s.

If you would like to live in an active adult community in Arundel that is close to four golf courses, call us Seachange Arundel today: 1800 652 797.

Resident Lecture Program with the Ageing Mind Initiative

16 November 2015 by Shane Cresser

Seachange Arundel’s new Resident Lecture Program has proven to be a hit with residents.

Our latest lecture saw UQ School of Psychology Professor Dr Nancy Pachana speak about her research on friendship and social support through later life.

Held on October 8 at our five-star Country Club, Dr Pachana discussed the importance of physical activity on both mood and health, providing residents with useful avenues to support and motivate the journey through their golden years.

Seachange Arundel Project Director Phil Goodman said Dr Pachana’s research through the Ageing Mind Initiative showed how community living could provide the over 50s with many enriching benefits.

“At its very core community living is a simple concept of like-minded people sharing common interests and interacting on a daily basis,” he said.

“The Ageing Mind Initiative closely aligns with the Seachange Vision, which encourages every resident to continue to nourish their mind, body and soul.”

Seachange Residents Tee Off at Charity Golf Day

16 November 2015 by Shane Cresser

Our second annual Seachange Golf Day Challenge has been heralded a ‘hole in one’ with more than 100 residents attending the popular sporting and social event. Residents from both communities had the opportunity to socialise and play with their neighbours, Seachange staff and local business supporters.

The Ambrose competition began at 12.30pm with a shotgun start. Teams enjoyed bottle water, juice and fresh fruit throughout the day from Woolworths Carrara. The event concluded with drinks, dinner and presentation of prizes at the Clubhouse.

Seachange Arundel was declared the overall winner with 924.5 points and Emerald Lakes Golf Club was the runner up with 1011 points.

The winning team achieved 55 points and was comprised of Kevin Seers, John Davies, Rick Ninness and Peter Bayada.

The second place team on 66.5 points was Phil Goodman, Dean Wiltshire, John McCann and Matt Langmack.

Last place on 88 points was Bob and Jenny Parmenter and John and Helen Dean.

Seachange Village Arundel Project Director Phil Goodman said the event helped bring together residents and invigorate their minds, bodies and souls.
“We look forward to holding the third annual event next year,” he said.

All proceeds from the day went to the Fred Hollows Foundation.

Seachange Arundel – 2015 Queensland Dual Industry Award Winner for Senior Living

12 November 2015 by Shane Cresser

Seachange Arundel continues to strengthen it’s position as Queensland’s most successful integrated communities for the active over 50s after winning at the prestigious 2015 UDIA Queensland Awards for Excellence.

The Pradella Property Ventures’ community was awarded the Seniors’ Living category of the prestigious awards, which recognise excellence in property development.

It caps off a successful year for Seachange Arundel, which also won the best Lifestyle Accommodation for Seniors category at the 2015 Master Builders Housing and Construction Awards announced earlier this year.

Seachange Arundel Project Director Phil Goodman said winning the UDIA award was a great honour for Seachange Arundel, which remained the most awarded over 50s lifestyle resort in Queensland.

He said it topped off an outstanding growth phase for the resort, which is expected to be sold by early April 2016.

“We are catering for the fastest growing segment of the Australian population who are demanding specific housing and facilities that give them lifestyle; buyers should act quickly to secure the best remaining homes”, he said.

“While many of our residents and prospective residents remain in the workplace – we estimate about a third – they no longer want or need the burden of a large home and backyards that require high maintenance.

“Seachange Arundel offers them the ultimate alternative – spacious homes, luxury fittings and gardens that are fully maintained”.

Integral to the Seachange Arundel lifestyle is the five-star Country Club, just a short walk from any home. Luxury facilities include dining areas, club lounges, games rooms, a library, bowls club, seven championship bowling rinks, 32-seat cinema with tiered seating, craft room, workshop, two floodlit tennis courts, indoor heated pool and outdoor lagoon pool, spa and gym, sauna, steam room, wine room and dance floor.

Seachange Arundel homes range from two bedroom terrace homes to three bedroom, free-standing designs, all of the traditional homes feature 2.7m ceilings, oversize double lock up garages and two bathrooms. They incorporate upmarket finishes including stone benches, ceiling fans, ducted air-conditioning and fully tiled floors.

The development is conveniently located across the road from a Coles-anchored shopping centre with retail, health care and commercial services. Seachange Arundel is also adjacent to the Coombabah Lakelands Conservation Area and within a five-kilometre drive of the Gold Coast University Hospital.
