28 December 2015 by Shane Cresser

Have you ever wondered why so many Australians are calling Seachange Emerald Lakes the best over 50s lifestyle resort in South East Queensland?

We could say it’s because of our active lifestyle and resort full of like-minded, active over-50s who are waiting to make friends with you. We could say it’s because of our 5 Star Country Club. We could say it’s because of the Emerald Lakes village centre, restaurants and other great amenities. We could say it’s because we are within 20 minutes of four great golf courses, shopping and a host of other Gold Coast amenities.

But for some who have moved in recently, they may say it’s because we are giving away a free 5-year golf membership at Emerald Lakes Golf Club and that it even comes with a free buggy.

This is a strictly limited offer, but when you qualify, it offers a wonderful lifestyle. You get a gold level membership with access to the course 7 days a week and no greens fees. You get a free HDK Express 2 Golf Buggy.

You also receive special discounts for members, access to tee times and competitions, loyalty points when you purchase food, beverages, equipment or range balls. In addition, you will receive guest privileges and 6 free passes for guests, along with an AGU handicap and an electronic driving range pass.

Seachange Lights Up this Christmas

22 December 2015 by Shane Cresser

Seachange Arundel Residents’ 4th Annual Christmas Lights display was celebrated in a magical evening at the community’s 5 Star Country Club on Saturday 19th December. Over 400 residents, family, friends and members of the local community joined in the festivities, with a special visit by Santa topping off a truly wonderful evening.

Local Councillor William Owen-Jones was in attendance to announce the Christmas lights resident winners. Mr Owen-Jones stated Seachange was a glowing example of over 50s living and enjoyed being part of the annual festivities.

Family and friends of Seachange residents were invited to tour the community and view the resident Lights displays. Voting by residents and guests led to awards for the remarkable efforts and spectacular displays of numerous residents. Best Street was taken out once again by Narrabeen Street who celebrated the evening in style and community spirit with their own street party.

Entertainment for the evening included a performance by the residents’ choir, the Seachange Songbirds, who entertained all by performing an array of classic Christmas carols. Seachange Project Director Mr Phil Goodman commended the residents on their community spirit and lighting display efforts. The night also featured a special appearance by Santa and Mrs Claus by way of a less traditional mode of transport – a chopper motor cycle.

The evening festivities concluded with Seachange residents and guests presented with gifted Christmas puddings on behalf of the community management.
“It is our small way of saying thank you to the community for the support they provide the Seachange Lifestyle Resorts with throughout the year,’ stated Mr Goodman.

Special thanks are extended to the Arundel Tavern and Christmas Galore for their continued support.

Getting Quality Sleep When You’re Over 50

21 December 2015 by Shane Cresser

In an over 50s lifestyle resort such as Seachange Emerald Lakes, a lot of people may not realise it, but sleep is important. We have a community of friendly, active seniors who get the most out of their days and nights. It is important to get high quality sleep every night so that you can enjoy all that our lifestyle has to offer.

Most people need from 7-9 hours of sleep every night to function at their optimum level. While many scientists say seniors don’t need as much sleep as younger people. we know everyone is different and some people need that extra hour or two of sleep that others don’t.

Here are some tips for getting high quality sleep and waking up full of energy.

Consistent Bedtime and Rise & Shine

We know it doesn’t always work out that way, but you should try to get to bed and wake up at the same time every night and day. This habit will keep you healthy in so many ways.

Stop Stimulants Early

Try to have your last cuppa in the middle of the afternoon. Try not to eat sugar late, either. If you have stimulants late in the day, they can still affect you when you are trying to sleep.

Prime the Sleep Pump

Try preparing for sleep an hour before bedtime. This can become a routine. Turn off the TV, computer and mobile devices. Draw a nice warm bath. Put on some soothing music. Or, you may do as many have for years: curl up with a nice book before bed.

Don’t Fall Asleep on Your Couch

If you are going to take a nap, take it in your bed. Don’t fall asleep on your couch. You want to teach your body that your bed is a sleep cue.

Don’t Eat Before Bed

Leave an hour or two before bed for your stomach to empty. Food prepares your body for activity: that is the last thing you want when you are trying to fall asleep.

Sleep and Intimacy Only

Don’t use your bed for anything but sleep and intimacy. This will train your body to fall asleep when you lay down. If you want to lay down with a book or while watching TV, do it on your couch. And don’t fall asleep there.

Why Swimming is so Healthy for Seniors

14 December 2015 by Shane Cresser

In our Arundel lifestyle retirement village, Seachange Arundel, we have a swimming pool and it gets used a lot. That is for two reasons. First, it is fun. Second, swimming is great exercise that helps keep seniors healthy. Here’s why.

Low Impact on Joints

Swimming may be the perfect exercise for those who have joint problems and don’t want to hurt them further. There is no traumatic stress on the hips, knees, ankles or back when swimming because they aren’t bearing weight or slamming into the pavement like what happens in jogging or running.

Increases Flexibility

While most people think you have to do stretching to increase your flexibility, swimming also increases it because you are stretching without even knowing it. Increasing flexibility can increase coordination and give you better posture, less soreness, less back pain and fewer injuries.

Tones Muscles

Water provides twelve times as much resistance as air does. In addition, swimming forces you to use almost every muscle in your body. Even if you are just walking on the bottom of the pool, you are getting great exercise due to the resistance of the water. This builds your strength, muscle tone and self-confidence.

Less Chance of Osteoporosis

Swimming makes your bones bear weight, making you less likely to suffer from osteoporosis. After the age of 50, approximately 33% of women and 20% of men experience at least one fracture of a bone due to osteoporosis. Swimming makes it less likely.

Healthy Heart

Swimming is an aerobic exercise. In other words, when you swim, you help your heart become larger, stronger and pump blood more efficiently. This reduces inflammation in your arteries and reduces your chances of coronary heart disease.

Better Mental Health

Swimming can actually improve your mental health because it can improve mood levels and reduce stress. Swimming is also a great way to be around people and avoid isolation.

How to Keep Playing Golf Well into Your Senior Years

11 December 2015 by Shane Cresser

In our active adult community, Seachange Arundel, we have a lot of seniors who still play golf. We are within 20 minutes of four golf courses and we have a putting green in the community. One of the main concerns we all have when we get older is how to keep playing the game we love for as long as possible and still be able to play well enough to make it enjoyable.

Here are some tips for playing golf well into your senior years.

Accept Your Limitations and Make Concessions

As you get older, you are going to lose some distance because you will lose some strength and flexibility. In addition, golf can start to hurt more as we get older, with aches and pains seemingly appearing out of nowhere. Our solution: accept your limitations as the “new normal.” Try to stay as fit as you can, but you will also need to make some concessions.

When you start to lose swing speed, you may go from a stiff shaft to a regular shaft and eventually to a senior shaft. You won’t be able to swing a 9 degree lofted driver anymore, so you will probably progress to a 10.5, a 12 or even a 13 if you can order custom clubs. You might find it better to throw out your driver and use a 3-wood off the tee.

The idea is going to be to get around the course pain free and keep it in the fairway, even if you hit a shorter distance.

Your Short Game is Your Best Friend

When you can’t reach an average par 4 in two anymore, you will need to work on your short game. If you can master your wedge and putter from 50 yards and in, you will still be able to turn in some nice scores, even in your 80’s.

If you would like to live in an active adult community in Arundel that is close to four golf courses, call us Seachange Arundel today: 1800 652 797.
