Ready, Set, Dive!

14 April 2023 by Sally Morrison

With 34,000 kilometres of coastline at our backdoor, Australians are spoilt for choice when it comes to world class scuba diving destinations.

Depending on the season, you can dive with any manner of sea creature from whales, dolphins and sharks to turtles, stingrays and more fish species than you can count. There are also unique opportunities to explore ancient shipwrecks, bright coral reefs and waters every shade of blue and green.

The popular underwater hobby also has many health and wellbeing benefits.

As you move through the water during a dive, your muscles work harder than they would if you were on land. The water and current create resistance and, the more you dive and swim, the more your muscles lengthen, build strength and develop endurance and flexibility.

Working all your muscles simultaneously during a dive gives you a complete cardiovascular workout, which is great for improving heart health and increasing bone density. Studies indicate that those who dive regularly are less prone to strokes and heart attacks.

Diving is also a great stress reliever, helping to improve blood circulation and reduce blood pressure.

Like the effects of meditation, breathing slowly and deeply while diving induces a calm state. While diving, you focus on the underwater environment, and your mind drifts away from the worries of the day. This helps to lower stress and balance the nervous system.

With so many recreational, health and wellbeing benefits, many over 50s are tempted by the idea of scuba diving. However, beginners may be hesitant to dip their toe in the diving world in case the deep-sea activity is too far outside their comfort zone.

The good news is it’s never too late to learn how to scuba dive. All ages can do it and the best part of all is no experience is necessary.

Diving in and around the Redlands

Victoria Point is one of a cluster of bayside villages in Southern Moreton Bay, giving Seachange Victoria Point residents easy access to multiple scuba diving locations close to home.

Popular dive sites can be found at nearby Coochiemudlo, Peel and Goat islands, and the local passenger ferry regularly takes locals to Coochie, as it is known.

Several dive schools offer courses for divers of all ages and skill levels in Brisbane and the Redlands.

Redland Sport Divers is a local club offering a variety of underwater activities and sports, including scuba diving.

Based in the Redlands, the team dives on sites from the HMAS Brisbane on the sunshine coast to the Tweed River on the Gold Coast. It also offers drift dives along the Gold Coast Seaway and “Clean Up” dives on Stradbroke Island. To find out about Redland Sport Divers’ organised diving and training options, visit the website.

Could scuba be for you? Why not take a dive out of your comfort zone and find out!

No Stopping – Singing Sensation Lynn Rogers

16 December 2020 by Sally Morrison

WINNING a talent quest in Coolangatta in 1957 catapulted a 16-year-old Lynn Rogers into a musical career that would see her meet the late great Frank Sinatra and sing alongside Sammy Davis Jnr.

Now at 79, Rogers shows no signs of resting her vocal chords despite an impressive career spanning 63 years.

“I am only semi-retired, still singing here and there, not pursuing a career any more, but I still love singing,” the Seachange Arundel resident said.

“The occasional jazz gigs, and the big band gigs come in and I am more than happy to do them.”

Finding fame in the 1960s with her chart-topping hit Just Loving You, she jetted off to the US a few years later and in 1965 regularly worked at the Latin Quartet in Las Vegas. Later she was signed to the Astor Records and released three singles and an EP.

“I was above The Easybeats, and back in those days, it was male groups that dominated the charts. It was very unusual to have a solo female singer,” Rogers said.

One night, the energetic vocalist befriended Sammy Davis Jnr after he got up during her show and started singing That Old Black Magic with her.

“Sammy was appearing in a show at the Palladium in London called Golden Boy, which was about a boxer, but I could never understand why because you’d blow on him and he’d fall over,” Rogers laughed.

Sammy Davis Jnr took the stunning singer under his wing and was instrumental in getting her on stage at the Star Dust Hotel in New York City.

“One night he introduced me to Frank Sinatra. I was so gobsmacked I accidentally spat across the table on Frank. I was stumbling over all my words because I just adore him,” she said.

“Even to this day, I can’t believe I spat on Frank Sinatra.”

Upon her return to Australia for a brief stint, not realising the magnitude of her success and status back home, she was greeted by national media as she disembarked her plane.

“I was walking along the tarmac at the airport, and all these reporters and paparazzi were trying to get photos of someone, so I stood to the side, so I wasn’t in their shot,” Rogers said.

“Well, on the news that night you can see me step aside and a journalist turns to me and says ‘Welcome back Ms Rogers, we’re taking photos of you’. I could not believe it.”

Rogers said Israel was her favourite place to perform, saying it felt like home.

“I was the first cabaret performer to appear there since the war, at the Magic Carpet Room in Tel Aviv-Yafo,” she said.

“I had been away from Australia for so long and when I came out on stage everyone started singing Waltzing Matilda. It was very emotional.”

Asked about her fondest memories from the 60s, Rogers said “if you can remember anything from the 60s, you weren’t really there”.

The songstress, who grew up in Mt Isa, said she felt sorry for young talented people who didn’t make the cut in singing contests because they had nowhere to learn their craft.

“The wonderful venues I sang in very early in my career are not there any more,” she said.

“Oh and by the way, to me, today’s music is as wonderful as it has always been — different, but wonderful. Music of all kinds does the heart and soul good and brings people together like nothing else can.”

Sneak peek of brand new $3million Country Club

29 July 2020 by Sally Morrison

It was a day to remember for our growing community of homeowners at Seachange Toowoomba, as they were treated to a “sneak peak” of their brand new Country Club last week. The Country Club is the second stage of the recreational facilities to be completed, joining the Award Winning Summer House and completing the spectacular facilities on offer.

There were plenty of smiles and lots of “oohs and aahs” as guests walked through the building, appreciating the wow factor of the spaces.

“Creating a sense of place is our passion. We design environments that promote people’s health, happiness and well being.” Said Mia Pradella of Seachange. “It is the attention to detail, quality and craftsmanship that truly sets this facility apart from anything else on offer in the region”.

The entry into the main lounge has the feeling of entering a private members club with a built in, two way fire place, feature stone and plush interiors creating a cosy and welcoming environment.

The bar area offers views out across Adams Park, with a large screen TV perfect for catching up on your favourite sports. The main dining hall which will play host to a variety of functions features a stage and dance floor and the kitchen has been equipped to service parties large and small. The Gold Class style Cinema, Arts and Craft studio, Workshop and Community Garden have all been included to allow people ample opportunity to explore their passions and hobbies.

The Bathers Pavilion has its own separate entry and includes an indoor heated lap pool, steam room, Yoga and Pilate’s studio and fully equipped gymnasium perfect for keeping fit and fabulous all year round.

Externally there is a bowling green with extensive undercover decking providing a perfect view point for those wanting to watch the action. An adjoining pocket park complete with rose bushes and giant chess set is just another area where home owners can enjoy the company of neighbours.

The Country Club is due to be officially opened on the 5th of September 2020, those interested in an exclusive preview tour can book in here.

Toowoomba Country Club almost finished!

28 May 2020 by Sally Morrison

It has been a busy 6 months at Seachange Toowoomba with work on the resorts main Country Club now nearing completion.  The $3.5million facility commenced construction in late 2019 and is due to be completed in a matter of weeks.  Once construction is wrapped up the facility will be fitted out with furniture and décor and ready for home owners to enjoy mid-year.

The architectural detailing and interior decor at the Country Club has been designed to optimise every opportunity for relaxation and enjoyment.  This new recreational environment has been tailor made to ensure residents enjoy a happy and healthy sense of well-being at all times.

The decor follows a much loved Hamptons styling without being too stereotypical.  The palette includes whites and neutrals with navy blues, soft greys and emerald greens to ensure a stamp of freshness.  Classic furniture pieces whisper elegance and sophistication yet remain casual and inviting.  The ambience is relaxed and open.

Choices have been made both aesthetically and practically, however, they have also been made in an environmentally conscientious way to help reduce the impact on our planet.  The designer has ensured a lighter footprint by using environmentally friendly and sustainable products where possible.

Products used include natural woollen carpet and rugs, Natural timbers for furniture and cabinetry, upholstery fabrics in natural cottons and linens rather than unsustainable man-made fibres.  Metal and timbers have been used rather than plastics and synthetics in lighting and accessories.

Both the interior and exterior styling offer the promise of an attractive and enjoyable experience.   The Country Club is soon to become the heart and soul of the community and we look forward to welcome people to visit this spectacular facility.
